APO ISLAND TRIP IN BANCA
Apo Island is one of the world’s best known community-organized marine sanctuaries, and as such it has been well documented by the global science community. The project was started in 1982, and led to the creation of hundreds of other marine sanctuaries in the Philippines. It is home to over 650 documented species of fish and estimated to have over 400 species of corals.
Visitors and tourists pay a fee to enter Apo Island and to snorkel or dive in the marine sanctuary; these fees are used to keep the sanctuary clean and in good condition.
The island is only 3 km in diameter and 120 m at its highest point, where a light house stands. There is a white stone beach, 250 m long, and an unusual vibrant coral reef.
The other parts of Apo Island have rocky beaches which are a resource for all kinds of large fish species. There is a hiking trail to the lighthouse on the top of the island where you can see a variety of fruit trees. There is no motorized traffic like cars or motorbikes found on the Island.
